Retrieval dynamics in recognition memory for paired –associates learned by rote repetition or visual imagery mnemonics are studied with the response signal method of Reed (Science, 1973,181, 574-576). In testing, subjects are cued to make a yes-no pair-recognition response at a variable time interval after onset of an A-B test pair. Speed accuracy tradeoff curves are generated by plotting recongnition accuracy as a function of processing time. The use of visual imagery resulted in higher asymptotic accuracy as expected, but somewhat slower retrieval dynamics initially. Repeated testing of the learned pairs speeded retrieval in the imagery condition but not in the rote condition. General practice in the task did not affect retrieval dynamics.
