Twenty Ss viewed the Zöllner and Hering illusions under conditions involving a temporal displacement of background and parallel lines. Both illusions persisted until the disparity reached about 1/2 sec. It was tentatively argued that these results may be interpreted as support for the notion that illusions and aftereffects are produced by similar mechanisms. The results are also considered in terms of iconic storage.
