Hoffbauer, H. (1969). Sind interessante Bilder effektiver? PL, 4, 167-186.
Ergebnisse und Interpretation einer empirischen Untersuchung über den Zusammenhang des Interessantheitsgrads situativer Bilder und der von ihnen ausgelösten Anzahl fremdsprachlicher Äusserungen.
(Summary.) Quite often it is assumed that the number of pupils' foreign language utterances depends on whether the pictures used during a course are likely to arouse the learners' interest. The author carried out an experiment trying to verify this assumption, using an experimental group and a control group. The degree of interestingness was defined operationally. With reference to three out of five experimental units, it became evident that the most utterances were evoked by illustrations picturing everyday situations without semantic difficulties, i.e. visual presentations of situations that normally are not particularly interesting. The productivity of the pictures was affected by factors of sex, the type of school the pupils attend, and the pictures' place in the instructional sequence. The results are discussed and explanations offered.
