Ahsen, A. (1984). ISM: The triple code model for imagery and psychophysiology. Journal of Mental Imagery, 8(4), 15-42.
Several central issues have been discussed in this paper to highlight some of the essential features of the image process, especially those dealing with interconnections between image, psychophysiological response and meaning generation. A model of imagery is presented throught the acronym ISM (Image-Somatic response-Meaning). The ISM or Triple Code Model is shown to be superior to other models such as the Dual Code Model of Paivio which does not account for the somatic response, an important dynamic link between image and meaning. The discussion elaborates the role of the somatic response in the enactive processes which is carried out through the staging capacity in the visual image. Variations of the ISM are described in the light of various combinations which emerge through interactions between I, S and M, serving various modes of operations in the psyche. The importance of the ISM model is emphasized for new experimental research and application in the field of psychology, education, the arts and mythology.
